-"The Solar System"

The students of Tech Valley High School under the direction of their teacher Ed Coolidge have constructed... the Solar System!  Aided by Proctors education dept and installed by Proctors stage crew led by James Peterson this outer space mobile rethinks the planets and in doing so helps us rediscover the fascination and wonderment of our galactic environment.
Welcome to our universe! After destroying earth, humans are forced to create alternative planets. The smaller blue and green sphere represents the earth, destroyed from human irresponsibility.  The surrounding geometrically shaped planets are examples of the new planets engineered in a whimsically and ironic way to create a new
environment for humans. The large blue sphere planet is filled with engineered trees, as an emblem of the new understanding of the importance of the environment and nature. Because it can no longer live in harmony with earth, humans were forced to create an alternative environment for nature. In the center, the yellow glowing cube represents the sun, enlightening the universe.  The choices and shapes used in the piece take a light-hearted look at a post-apocalyptic universe. The lights in this installation are LED's that are animated by micro-controllers. The piece demonstrates two major messages. The first message is one of warning, predicting the future of the planet in an abstract way, if actions are not taken to create environmental harmony. The next message is one of hope- showing that human ingenuity and critical thinking will always provide a solution to tribulations that humans face.

Hearst Education Center Stairwell at Proctors

-Ginger Ertz / Soft Chandelier
Chenille stems, steel - 2007
Ginger Ertz is a Schenectady sculptor who works primarily in chenille stems (pipe-cleaners).  While her work is abstract, it often recalls undersea creatures or plant forms.  She is also interested in depicting the movement of water.  The repetitive nature of this work is a meditative process which allows her hands time to make decisions as the work unfolds intuitively.  Chenille stems are the perfect medium for her:  the wire center creates the structure, while the fibers create a surface that recalls the comfort of a favorite bathrobe or bedspread, and still invokes the humor and playfulness of a child’s art material.  Ginger is the recipient of a 2009 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.  Her work is exhibited throughout the region and New England.  In addition to her artwork, Ginger is a Museum Educator at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.
